No sailing on Sunday

With cyclone Pam now upgraded to Category Five and its track towards New Zealand’s north-east uncertain, the Volvo Ocean Race organisers have announced Leg Five to Brazil will not start before Tuesday.

Knut Frostad the race CEO said prudence dictated the latest postponement. Previously, with the super storm intensifying, he said the start would be put off until Monday.

It has also been announced that there will now be no racing at all on Sunday 15 March. The Race Village is closing a day early due to the storm. The early closure means the village can be dismantled safely and begin its journey to Newport, Rhode Island on time.

Pam, potentially the worst major storm in three or four decades, is currently expected to brush the East Coast with the worst effects in the Coromandel, East Cape and Gisborne.
