Site Blessing for Auckland Race Village

Saturday 14 February was highlighted in diaries as Valentine’s Day but for the team delivering the Auckland Stopover of the Volvo Ocean Race it had an entirely different importance as it was the day that the Race Village was handed over to the Auckland Stopover.

Ngati Whatua Orakei, the local iwi, provided a mihi whakatau for the site on a beautiful morning on Te Wero Island in the Viaduct Harbour.

A karanga initiated by Ngati Whatua Orakei invited the Auckland Stopover team, including representatives from ATEED, Waterfront Auckland and Volvo Ocean Race SLU, on to the site for the mihi whakatau. In customary style, the mihi was followed by a hongi. The blessing of the site completed the formalities. Afterwards, everyone shared refreshments in the Viaduct Events Centre, the Race Headquarters.

“Everyone present was very moved by the ceremony,” said Auckland Stopover General Manager Grant Calder. “We would like to thank Ngati Whatua Orakei for welcoming us on to Te Wero Island. After so many months of hard work planning the Stopover, the Race Village build is now under way and we are all counting the days to the official opening on 27 February."
