Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing wins Leg 1

After more than 25 days of racing over 6,847 nautical miles, Ian Walker skippered Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing to victory in Leg 1 of the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15, in a thrilling finish just 12 minutes ahead of Dong Feng Racing Team, who had been chasing them hard for the last few days.

Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing arrived at the finish line under Table Mountain in Cape Town in the early hours of Thursday morning (NZDT).

"It's quite emotional actually,” Walker told Race HQ, minutes after crossing the line. "I didn't think I would be - but that last couple of hours, they threw everything at us. We've had people ride on our heels for the last 10 days or so. I must congratulate Dongfeng, an absolutely fantastic performance."

Team Brunei finished in third place just over four hours later. Team Vestas Wind is currently leading the rest of the fleet and should finish in fourth place ahead of Team Alvimedica. The last two boats are about 25 nm apart with Team SCA, currently seventh, doing everything possible to try to overhaul Mapfre.
