Team Alvimedica win opening In-Port Race

The Turkish/American entry Team Alvimedica won the opening event of the Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 as they crossed the line first in the In-Port Race in Alicante, Spain.

Skippered by Charlie Enright (USA) with Kiwi Dave Swete in the crew, Team Alvimedica crossed the finish line in 14:52.02, a mere five seconds ahead of Race veteran Ian Walker's Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing with Kiwi Daryl Wislang aboard.

In near-perfect sailing conditions with 14 knot winds, it was a thrilling race as the lead changed hands several times after a great start by China's Dongfeng Racing Team.

Leg 1 from Alicante to Cape Town begins next Saturday (11 October). In all, the boats will cover 38,739 nautical miles over nine months before the adventure finishes in Gothenburg, Sweden on June 27, 2015. They will visit 11 ports in all, including a pit-stop in The Hague.
