Trophy comes to NZ

The Volvo Ocean Race Trophy will be on display at the Auckland Boat Show from 25 - 28 September - now's your chance to come and view it close up and take a selfie beside one of the most prestigious prizes in international sport.

As with the Olympic Games, there is no financial reward for winning this 38,739 nautical-mile race around the world, but the Volvo Ocean Race trophy symbolises the glory of winning what is still one of the most extreme challenges in the world of sport.

Just competing in the Race represents an achievement, with success meaning everything to those who have achieved it.

Mike Sanderson, skipper of ABN AMRO ONE in 2005-06, summed this up when after crossing the final finish line in Gothenburg he said: “This is my Olympic gold, my Mount Everest, my childhood dream.”

The trophy is made from aluminium and silver plate and 12 wave-shaped rings that represent the 12 editions of the race so far.

Eleven rings are each engraved with the year, route and name of the winning boat and skipper from previous races. The 12th ring will be engraved at the end Volvo Ocean Race 2014-15 when it finishes in Gothenburg in the summer of 2015.

A new ring is added for each future edition of the race.

The trophy stands 70 centimetres high and weighs nine kilogrammes.
