Team Vestas win Leg Zero

The Volvo Ocean Race fleet had the chance to assess each other’s form in the recent final practice race – Leg Zero - over 360nm from Alicante to Palma, Majorca.

“Leg Zero is a really important exercise for both the Race and the sailors,” said Race Director Jack Lloyd. “We are able to dry run all our communications in Race Control and for the media.

“Safety of course is paramount – this Race is risky enough as it is – and we want to ensure all the crews know exactly what they need to do if things go badly wrong such as a sailor falling overboard.”

Leg Zero, which does not count towards the overall Trophy, was won by the recently formed Team Vestas Wind, with Team Brunel just ten seconds behind.

Team Vestas Wind skipper Chris Nicholson said “It’s really cool for our team. For how busy we’ve been in the last few months, to actually be able to go out there and be competitive, do all the manoeuvres, and also have time to focus on some strategy and tactics, it was exceptional.”

Nicholson, Rae and Salthouse raced together in the last edition of the Volvo Ocean Race in the Emirates Team New Zealand entry CAMPER, which finished second overall.
