Flash mob!

Did you see them on Queen Sreet this morning? Volunteers and staff from the Auckland Stopover donned bright yellow lifejackets and surprised Auckland commuters this morning!

“We wanted to create a little more awareness around the race for the last two days," explained Auckland Stopover Creative Manager Ben Hilless. "The idea was to create something different when people were walking to work at peak time.”

With the support of WaterSafe Auckland, the mob donned lifejackets and swayed and swam their way down Queen St.

At the Victoria St intersection a synchronised swimming, grinding and sail hoisting display took place amidst cries of VOLVO, much to the surprise of those on their way about their business.

Hilless was supported by staff from Watersafe Auckland, Volvo Race staff and volunteers. Many were first-timers wanting to try out a flash mob experience. He even roped in some of his family.

“It was difficult waking up so early, but it was worth it," said volunteer Priscilla Thomas. "The fact that there were lots of other people meant I didn't feel so awkward!”

The event went well, much to the relief of Hilless. “Safety and no chaos is our focus.”

The mob buzzed and dispersed.
