Live from CAMPER!

Volvo Ocean Race MC Hannah White managed to catch a quick phone conversation with Hamish Hooper, the Media Crew Member aboard CAMPER with Emirates Team New Zealand this afternoon.

As CAMPER was approaching Cape Reinga, she was in a tight, three way battle for a podium position against Puma and Telefónica who have been in sight of each other and taking turns occupying the second, third and fourth place slots since the wee hours of this morning.

“All is well on board and the mood is good," reported a tired sounding Hooper. "There was energy from seeing New Zealand (The Three Kings Islands). We’re looking forward to, and one of the big reasons for doing this is sailing into Auckland and seeing the (Rangitoto) Channel and the skyline.”

White asked what the crew were missing food-wise, Hooper answered “Burger Fuel! And fish and chips would also be high on the list.”

White also asked Hooper about what he thought lay ahead for the trip down the East coast.

“Reaching and maybe some downwind but also light and tricky,” said Hooper.

With conditions like this in the forecast, anything can happen and it’s easy for the lead yacht to go from hero to zero. With three boats in visual sight of each other, the one thing you can count on is that it will be hand-to-hand combat from North Cape to North Head and the crew won’t be getting much sleep tonight.
