The Race Village

Auckland Viaduct has been transformed into a vibrant Race Village for the Stopover with the Viaduct Events Centre acting as Race HQ.

How close to life onboard can you get?

Eastern Viaduct will host The Volvo Ocean Race Experience, which offers visitors the chance to look through the eyes of the crew and get closer to the Volvo Ocean Race. The actual race boat display and the pitlane of team bases is the central point in the race village. In the ”Race Boat Experience”, visitors will be able to crawl through a full size Volvo Ocean 65 boat display and see what it is like to sleep in a bunk, stand at the helm, check out the living conditions and get a real feel for every aspect of life on board. "The Globe” will be home to our sustainability programme and a venue for special events and where visitors can enjoy Volvo Ocean Race video material. ”The Grinding Challenge” lets visitors compete in grinding, to feel how hard it is to raise the sails onboard the Volvo Ocean 65s.

The merchandise shop is managed by Musto, our official supplier of clothing and footwear, will also be located on Eastern Viaduct and offers visitors the chance to purchase the official Musto Volvo Ocean Race merchandise collection, as well as promotional items produced by Volvo Merchandise Company, and team crew gear.

Te Wero Island will be the entertainment hub with a packed programme of events on the big stage from 10am to 10pm every day, large screens, live music plus concept bars.

The Viaduct Events Centre will house the Boatyard, Race Management and the Media Centre. Visitors to the Viaduct Events Centre will enjoy a bustling dockside environment with the moored Volvo Ocean 65’s (VO65) fleet as a backdrop. "The Boatyard" gives visitors a behind the scenes look into the repair and maintenance of the race boats.

In 2014-15, alongside the One Design Volvo Ocean 65, the race introduced the Boatyard. The Boatyard is a central maintenance centre, staffed by experts from across the marine industry, that has a home in Lisbon but also travels with the race to manage boat maintenance and repairs around the world throughout the nine months of competition.

Karanga Plaza, with steps down to the water's edge, will be the west entrance into the Race Village, giving direct access to the Viaduct Events Centre, Pit Lane and the Team Bases. You will also be able to check out the amazing Volvo Product deck.

Pit Lane will showcase the Volvo Ocean 65 fleet, the most advanced monohull race boats in the world, moored in front of the Viaduct Events Centre. Visitors to Pit Lane will be able to view the boats up close and watch the crews prepare the boats for the next gruelling leg round Cape Horn to Itajai, Brazil.

Wisdom is our official albatross mascot, which will continue to interact with visitors in the race village and spread the sustainability message.
